American Pie trata sobre la música a lo largo de las décadas de los 50, 60 y principio de los 70. Empieza hablando sobre “el día en el que la música murió”, el 3 de febrero de 1959, cuando tres estrellas musicales murieron en un accidente de avioneta: el pionero del rock Buddy Holly, el DJ conocido como the Big Bopper, y Richie Valens, autor de “La bamba“. Elvis Presley fue reclutado y Chuck Berry fue arrestado por meterse con una prostituta.
