Lyrics

play She moves like she don't care
play Smooth as silk, cool as air
play Ooh it makes you wanna cry
play She doesn't know your name
play And your heart beats like a subway train
play Ooh it makes you wanna die

play Ooh, don't you wanna take her?
play Ooh, wanna make her all your own?

play Maria, you've gotta see her
play Go insane and out of your mind
play Regina, Ave Maria
play A million and one candle lights

play I've seen this thing before
play In my best friend and the boy next door
play Fool for love and fool on fire

play Won't come in from the rain
play She's oceans running down the drain
play Blue as ice and desire

play Don't you wanna make her?
play Ooh, don't you wanna take her home?

play Maria, you've gotta see her
play Go insane and out of your mind
play Regina, Ave Maria
play A million and one candle lights

play Ooh, don't you wanna break her?
play Ooh, don't you wanna take her home?

play She walks like she don't care
play Walking on imported air
play Ooh, it makes you wanna cry

play Maria, you've gotta see her
play Go insane and out of your mind
play Regina, Ave Maria
play A million and one candle lights

play Maria, you've gotta see her
play Go insane and out of your mind
play Regina, Ave Maria
play A million and one candle lights

meaning Meaning

This was written by Blondie keyboard player Jimmy Destri, who when asked what this song was about replied:

"Desire. Teenage desire because I have a teenage daughter and she's pretty beautiful and I watch all these boys gawk at her. I put myself in their shoes thinking about what I used to do with girls back then. I wasn't a very forward guy at all, I was like from afar and I'd go home and write a poem about her - I was really a sad little bastard. It sounds cute but you don't get any attention that way. So 'Maria' is about desire and the whole idea of using the Ave Maria thing is a way of saying she's on a pedestal, she's almost holy. It's not a religious thing at all, I don't believe in religion really."
