Under the Bridge

Lyrics

playSometimes I feel
playLike I don't have a partner
playSometimes I feel
playLike my only friend
playIs the city I live in
playThe city of angels
playLonely as I am
playTogether we cry

playI drive on her streets
play'Cause she's my companion
playI walk through her hills
play'Cause she knows who I am
playShe sees my good deeds
playAnd she kisses me windy
playI never worry
playNow that is a lie

playI don't ever wanna feel
playLike I did that day
playBut take me to the place I love
playTake me all the way
playI don't ever wanna feel
playLike I did that day
playBut take me to the place I love
playTake me all the way

playIt's hard to believe
playThat there's nobody out there
playIt's hard to believe
playThat I'm all alone
playAt least I have her love
playThe city she loves me
playLonely as I am
playTogether we cry

playI don't ever wanna feel
playLike I did that day
playBut take me to the place I love
playTake me all the way
playI don't ever wanna feel
playLike I did that day
playBut take me to the place I love
playTake me all the way

playUnder the bridge downtown
playIs where I drew some blood
playUnder the bridge downtown
playI could not get enough
playUnder the bridge downtown
playForgot about my love
playUnder the bridge downtown
playI gave my life away

Play with the song, fill the gaps

meaningMeaning

This ode to Los Angeles is a tragic tale of addiction. Lead singer Anthony Kiedis wrote this about his days as a heroin addict and the loneliness that went with it. The bridge mentioned in the song is a place where he sometimes went to buy drugs and get high.

This song was originally just a poem that Kiedis wrote. It was a very personal poem. Producer Rick Rubin found it in one of his notebooks and told Anthony that it could be a great song. At first, he didn't want to sing it or share it with anyone, but he eventually came around.
